Spencer Ward, M.D., Psychiatrist
I’m Dr. Spencer Ward, a Board Certified Psychiatrist with over 40 years experience in medication management and psychotherapy. I am certified as an Internal Family Systems Therapist, trained in Gestalt therapy and Imago couples and family therapy. I'm proud to be part of a group of highly trained and experienced professionals dedicated to helping individuals and couples find and develop positive relationships.
My passion is in developing and using systematic approaches to personal growth and to resolving problems for couples and individuals. I am recognized as having a combination of systematic thinking and emotional sensitivity. This is illustrated in my use of cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy. My particular interest is in teaching individuals, couples and groups how to communicate effectively, build strong and lasting relationships and use the energy of anger to help each person meet their individual needs and strengthen their relationships. I am also dedicated to the principles of Conscious Uncoupling, and believe mediation is an important step in the dissolution of any type of partnership or marriage.
I practice in two locations - Bethesda and Potomac, Maryland, and have weekend and evening appointments available.

“Dr. Ward is the best Psychiatrist I have ever worked with. He has a real empathy and curiosity for my experience – both physical and emotional. He is calm, thorough, safe and trustworthy. If something isn’t working, he is always willing to find a new approach and has always been available whenever I really need him. I am so thankful to have found this doctor!”
– Jan “Dr.Ward made it safe for me to cry and to get to my deeper feelings. As a boy and man I was taught that it’s weak to cry. He helped me see tears as another healthy emotion. Thanks to our work together, I have a stable relationship and less stressful work environment.” – Richard “I have worked with Dr. Ward for the last year. My depression is gone, and I am enjoying my marriage and my work. I am thankful to him for helping me understand the causes of my anger and helping me to finally enjoy my life.” – Anna “I had seen four therapists over the past six years and felt very frustrated with no change in my depression and anger. I had almost given up on therapy. But, after meeting with Dr. Ward once a week for the last 8 months I feel actually great about my life, more hopeful in my marriage and proud to be the father of 5 children. Dr. Ward helped me save my marriage on the rocks. He has been patient but firm in expecting me to change rather then complaining about everyone else in my life. He has helped me see why it had previously been so hard to change. Thanks!” – George |
